Manfred Eigen, one of the towering figures of physical chemistry, passed away on February 6, 2019. He was 91, and had earned his Nobel prize in chemistry in 1967, at the ripe age of 40. Eigen is possibly the most honored German scientist (see his Max Planck Society article). You may read the obituary for Manfred Eigen written by Ariel Fernandez in Physics Today (APS). Prior to his academic career in the US, Ariel Fernandez was a senior researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry founded and directed by Dr. Eigen.
